What you need to know

Welcome to Movement In Mind

Starting something new can feel exciting, and perhaps a little daunting, but there’s no need to worry. Everyone in the practice was a beginner once, and we’ll guide you step by step.

This page contains everything you’ll need to know before your first session.

Where We Meet

Our classes take place at Broomhall & Sound Community Hall, Nantwich.

The hall is a warm, welcoming community venue in the heart of the community. Many of our participants comment on its friendly atmosphere and say it quickly feels like a place where they can relax and enjoy learning.

On warm, dry days we’re fortunate to have a beautiful field beside the hall, where we occasionally take our practice outdoors.

Free parking is available nearby and the venue is fully accessible.

What Should I Wear?

There is no special uniform.

Wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely.

Flat, comfortable shoes with flexible soles are ideal. We recommend avoiding thick-soled trainers or walking boots, as they make it more difficult to feel the floor beneath you. Bare feet or socks are not appropriate for these classes.

If you decide Tai Chi becomes a regular part of your life, you may eventually choose to buy Tai Chi shoes, but they certainly aren’t necessary when you’re starting out.

What Should I Bring?

You don’t need any special equipment.

Just bring:

  • Yourself
  • Comfortable clothing
  • Suitable footwear
  • A bottle of water if you’d like one

Please don’t bring a yoga mat – Tai Chi is practised standing (or seated if needed), and we don’t use mats.

If You Have a Health Condition

Many of our participants live with health conditions, arthritis, chronic pain, balance concerns or reduced mobility.

Our teaching is adaptable, and you’re always encouraged to work within your own comfort and ability.

If you’ve told us about any health conditions on your registration form, we’ll take these into account as we teach.

If anything changes, or there’s something you’d like us to know, please have a quiet word with us before class.

If You Miss a Session

We encourage you to attend every week because each session builds on the last.

However, we understand that holidays, appointments and family commitments sometimes get in the way.

Your Course Hub includes practice videos to support each week’s learning, so if you miss the occasional class you’ll be able to catch up at home before the following week.

If you know you’ll miss several sessions, please let us know.

Practising Between Classes

You don’t need to practise for hours.

Even five or ten minutes a few times each week can help you become more familiar with the movements and build your confidence.

The videos in your Course Hub are there to support your learning – they’re not about getting everything perfect.

Don’t Worry About Getting It Right

One of the questions we hear most often is “What if I can’t remember everything?”

Please don’t worry. Nobody remembers every movement in the first few weeks.

Tai Chi is learned gradually, and we’ll revisit the same principles many times. The aim isn’t to perform perfectly – it’s to enjoy learning and notice your understanding growing over time.

Staying Connected

During your course you’ll have access to your Course Hub, where you’ll find:

  • Practice videos
  • Course information
  • Helpful reminders
  • Resources to support your learning

You’ll also receive our monthly Newsletter. Towards the end of the course we’ll also explain how you can continue your Tai Chi journey through our Wellness Membership if you’d like to keep learning with us.

Questions?

We’re always happy to help.

  • During class: Please ask – if you’re wondering about something, someone else probably is too.
  • Between classes: The Movement In Mind WhatsApp group is the quickest way to ask a question or let us know if you can’t attend.
  • Email: Ideal for anything that isn’t urgent.

As we’re often teaching or working with psychotherapy clients, the practice telephone goes straight to voicemail and isn’t monitored throughout the day.
