Beginners Course
Your first step into Tai Chi
Everyone starts somewhere.
Whether you’re looking to improve your balance, manage stress, move with greater confidence or simply learn something new, our six-week beginners course provides a welcoming and supportive place to begin. Designed specifically for complete beginners, the course introduces the fundamental principles of Tai Chi in a friendly, relaxed environment where there’s no pressure to “get it right”. You don’t need any previous experience – just loose, comfortable clothing, a little curiosity and a willingness to learn.
Why start with an introductory course?
Learning Tai Chi is different from joining a weekly exercise class. Each week builds on the one before, allowing you to gradually develop confidence, understanding and skill. By learning together with other beginners, you’ll have time to explore the movements without feeling rushed, ask questions and discover how Tai Chi works in practice. Many people tell us they’re surprised by how much there is to learn – and how enjoyable that journey becomes.
What you’ll learn
During the course you’ll be introduced to:
- The basic principles of Tai Chi
- Posture and body alignment
- Relaxed, natural breathing
- Weight shifting and balance
- Simple flowing movements
- Moving with awareness rather than force
- How to practise safely at home between sessions
Most importantly, you’ll begin developing the skills that form the foundation of your future Tai Chi practice.
Is it suitable for me?
Our beginner course is suitable for adults of all ages. You don’t need to be fit, flexible or coordinated before you start. Many of our participants join us because they:
- would like to improve their balance
- want to move more confidently
- are looking for gentle, mindful movement
- have been advised to try Tai Chi for their health and wellbeing
- simply want to learn something new
Movements can often be adapted where needed, and you’ll always be encouraged to work within your own comfort and ability.
Our teaching approach
At Movement In Mind, we teach authentic Tai Chi in a supportive and non-competitive environment. We focus on helping you understand why you’re moving in a particular way, rather than simply copying movements. Questions are always welcome. Everyone learns differently, and we encourage you to progress at your own pace. Our aim isn’t perfection – it’s helping you develop confidence, awareness and enjoyment in your practice.
Where We Meet
Our classes take place at Broomhall & Sound Community Hall, in the heart of the local community. The hall is warm, welcoming and beautifully cared for, creating a calm, comfortable space in which to learn. It’s not a large sports hall or leisure centre – instead, it’s a cosy community venue where people quickly feel at ease. Many of our members comment on its friendly atmosphere and say it feels like a place where they can simply relax and enjoy learning. There is plenty of parking and the venue is fully accessible.
We chose this venue because it feels like home. It’s a cosy, welcoming community hall where people can relax, take their time and enjoy learning without feeling overwhelmed. The atmosphere is every bit as important to us as the Tai Chi itself. We’ve been part of the Broomhall & Sound community for many years, and we’re proud to call the communty hall our home. It’s a place where people know one another, newcomers are made welcome, and many lasting friendships have begun.
We’re proud to be part of the local community, and grateful for a venue that reflects the welcoming spirit of Movement In Mind. On warm, dry days we’re also fortunate to have a beautiful open field beside the hall, where we occasionally take our practice outdoors and enjoy moving in the fresh air.
Over the years, we’ve become part of the life of Broomhall & Sound Community Hall, and we’re grateful to be able to share this welcoming community space with our members each week.
A note about learning Tai Chi
Tai Chi isn’t something you master in six weeks. The beginner course provides the foundations on which everything else is built. Like learning a musical instrument or a new language, regular practice brings deeper understanding and greater confidence over time. Many of our members tell us that the more they practise, the more they discover.
What happens after the course?
